Setting an example

The Nordic Choice hotel chain announced this week that it has removed pay-per-view pornography from its 171 establishments – and in its flagship hotel, contemporary art videos will be shown instead. The chain’s owner, Petter Stordalen, Norwegian businessman and philanthropist, said he had decided on the change after becoming involved in Unicef’s campaign against the trafficking and sexual exploitation of children; the porn industry, he argued, “contributes to trafficking” and he had no wish to support it. Instead of porn, guests at The Thief Hotel in Oslo will now have a choice of nine works of art, including Sam Taylor-Wood’s Still Life – a three-minute film of a bowl of fruit decomposing. “No one has asked for their porn back!” said the hotel’s Siri Løining Kolderup. “We hope and predict porn will not be a part of the next generation of in-room entertainment in any hotel, anywhere.”

Good news! Porn is the antithesis of Epicureanism. That’s not to say that Epicureanism is prudish – on the contrary. It just means that it stands for love, affection, tenderness and respect. What hotel porn does is arouse lone male guests in hotels to pick up the phone and hire a prostitute. Best tip of the day: read a good book.

All the same, not sure about the nine works of art.
