This is absolutely terrible news! There’s nothing wrong with a drink or two. If you get drunk then its your problem, not anyone else’s problem (apart from drink driving.) But otherwise, a pint in a pub is a great British tradition, its decline is lamentable. As for London, I can only say that it longer feels like a British city. Its become far richer and far more diverse than the rest of the country. This means that culturally its going to be very different, alcohol consumption rates notwithstanding.
I do agree with you. The pub is a great British institution and I think it enhances a spirit of community. In other countries there are few places where you can go and have an enjoyable evening discussing issues with people who, otherwise, you would never meet.
