Maybe it is the influence of a new book called “The Swerve: How the World Became Modern” by Stephen Greenblatt, but suddenly I am receiving emails from people intrigued by Epicureanism. This is a promising development, especially for Americans in despair about the future of their country and disillusioned by what passes for Christianity in the 21st Century. Epicurus told us to avoid politics and to seek solace in the Garden, with friends. Observing the current run-up to the Presidential election, this advice is particularly appropriate. What a mess! American democracy subverted by a handful of billionaires and financial people! Anyone for a stroll round the Garden in peace and quiet?
