A few weeks ago residents in a slum district of Islamabad spotted Rifta Masih, an 11-year-old girl from a minority Christian family, “acting suspiciously”; she was holding the charred remains of pages from the Koran having apparently set fire to them. Now she’s jail accused of blasphemy, for which she could even be sentenced to death. But how can a child – and one said to have Down’s syndrome, to boot – be charged with such a thing? But the good news is that a local, extremist mullah has now been charged with orchestrating the whole thing because he wanted to eliminate Christians from the neighborhood. It seems he might actually have put the charred Koran pages into the hands of the child.
It is nice report that something reassuring has happened in Pakistan for once. At the same time, religious extremism is a blight on the planet, whether it is in so- called Christian parts of the world.
