The ticket to Celine Dion’s Las Vegas show cost us $150 each through a ticket touting company (You are lucky to get these tickets, we were told). I remember when I first went to Las Vegas they almost gave away the shows (and the hotel rooms) to get you there to gamble . No more. Now you rub shoulders with hordes of people desperate to get rid of their money. They must be desperate if they spend $150 on a show like Celine Dion’s. It’s all hi-tech glitz, and videos and flashing lights and not an ounce of personality or talent to be seen. The audience greeted the star with enthusiasm, but at the end the applause was muted and the faces glum. It was honestly dreadful.
If Epicureanism is enjoying the brief life you have then I can think of better ways of employing my time than playing into the hands of the big corporations and their ersatz, packaged shows and over-hyped personalities. A modern visit to Las Vegas turns out to be mildly depressing. They don’t even let you win a $20 bill of the one-arm bandits ant more. Mind you, most of the visitors don’t remember the old days and don’t know any better. Share tip for the entertainment companies ; buy, buy, buy!
If Dion is the best they can do it is not just Las Vegas that is in decline.
