How wise epicurus was indeed. We really dont have to go too far back in history to see that this is so; for instance, in the south of my youth, it was generally agreed(at least by whites) that it was ok to discriminate against blacks;
I once assumed that even basic human dignity would call for laws against murder, lying, stealing, etc; but that is not necessarily proven out by history.
Even our response to the laws of the old testament have changed throghout history; in spite of fundies saying otherwise; I dont see many fundies(or jews for that matter) keeping all or most of the laws enumerated in deuteronomy.
How pernicious Plato’s “Republic” is compared to the truthful Epicurus. Plato sought absolute justice and ridiculed those who argued, as did Epicurus, that justice acquired meaning only in the context of human societies.
In fact, doesn’t the idea of “absolute” seem oxymoronic when juxtaposed with anything relating to humanity?
