Japanese culture

My son works for a Japanese bank in London.  Some while ago, the manager of a smaller regional bank in Japan was persuaded to assist what turned out to be a mafia operation,  money laundering and so on.  He tried to get out of it, but he and his senior managers were threatened with their lives, and they acquiesced reluctantly.

Fast forward a few years and my son’s bank took over said smaller bank, and discovered this illegal operation through the auditors.   The word leaked out to the media.  In Japan this meant huge loss of face. Even though the new management had nothing to do with the scandal, they had to apologize publicly with very deep bows, and undergo a period of remorseful self-flagellation.  This took the form of compulsory training in dealing with dubious accounts for everyone in the company  in Japan and overseas, and a six months ban on all social activities inside and outside the company.  This ban will be lifted shortly, the period of penitence having been served, and my son will again be able to take bank clients horseracing at Ascot, or whatever he does to develop business.

Can anyone imagine such interesting behavior ocurring in Western companies?
