These are the words of a young black man who is protesting the rising number of killings by the police. He is right. One child, for instance, was killed by a trigger-happy cop while playing with a toy gun; and so it goes on.
According to a new poll, only 41% of older people over 65 in America would have indicted the policeman who killed Mr. Garner in New York. Only 41%. This is the same generation that rioted in the streets against being drafted to fight in Vietnam. Some of them, when young, marched for civil rights fifty years ago. Now they seem to think it’s all right (or, having seen the video, are not quite sure?) for militarized bullies to go around taking lives for trivial crimes. Will this be the epitaph of a generation?
If you snd I, Dear Reader, supporters of enlightened Epicurean humanism, do not stand up to be counted in this matter, then who will be left to support “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”, not to mention the rule of law? By turning their backs on a section of the population who fear for their lives, the 59% are betraying the basis on which the United States was founded.
