Good governance: No.6 in the list of Gross National Happiness criteria

“Good governance” is a euphemism for lack of corruption. There is scarcely a single country in the world that can claim to have an uncorrupted political system. And this includes the United States and Germany.

Epicurus preached happiness as the greatest good. You cannot achieve general happiness when the playing field is unequal, a happy, successful life is dependent on how much money is paid in bribes, and where there are no ethics and no rules.

How you eliminate corruption I have no idea. The only answer is to pay people more so that their basic needs are met and the incentive to bribe, or take bribes, is reduced. But how much is enough? One does admire the Bhutanis for at least trying, but I fear success will be elusive.

  1. I remember one of my salesmen coming to me one day and telling me that we could get a very substantial piece of business if we could only deposit a handsome pourboire into the current account of the buyer at a certain large company. I told the salesman,”We don’t do business that way. I would rather pack it all in and find a new job”. No doubt some competitor or other stepped in and did the bribery bit, doing what he thought was necessary. But whereas I hope he felt ashamed of himself, I felt very happy!
