If the gods listened to the prayers of men, all humankind would quickly perish since they constantly pray for many evils to befall one another.

It may well be that the gods listen to the prayers of men, for all I know. My problem is that their response is so spotty.
It appears that being good, being kind to old ladies and dogs, supporting Ugandan charities, attending church every Sunday and leading a morally blameless life still cannot elicit the desired responses on a consistent basis.
By now some statistician should have produced data to show the efficacy of asking the gods to help with the mortgage. They have had thousands of years to work on the problem. Nothing so far has been forthcoming, but I am personally waiting with an open mind for the evidence.
