Greek Epicureans believed that enjoyment of life is prevented by two human problems: lack of control over the emotions, and a propensity to think of the future instead of the present, “the now”.
Since overcoming these human traits is difficult they dreamt up experiments. One such technique was to imagine yourself on your deathbed, the last moment of your life. What thoughts come into your head? Have you had a good life, or do you have serious regrets? Are there things you wish you had done differently? You have either lived well, in which case good luck to you. But if not, it makes no difference if you die because you didn’t know what to do with your life in the first place This technique opens your eyes to what is really important in your life.
