For ordinary people it is hard to have a pleasurable life and peace of mind when you see vulnerable, mentally ill people thrown out of safe institutions to live on the street, not knowing whether there will be room that night at the local hostel. Paying tax to look after them and give them dignity is the least we can do. Epicurus would not have believed in the modern commercial Christmas, but he would have supported this.
