A man who ate two bags of microwaved popcorn every day for a decade had been awarded $7.2m in damages after developing “popcorn lung” – an irreversible obstructive lung disease that results in a severe shortness of breath. Wayne Watson, from Denver, sued the popcorn’s manufacturer Gilster-Mary Lee Corp, as well as the owners of the supermarket chain where he bought it, for failing to warn customers that inhaling directly, the compound used to give popcorn it’s buttery taste, could put them at risk of serious lung damage. A Colorado found Gilster-Mary Lee Corp liable for 80 per cent of the damages, and Kroger Co – the retailer – liable for the other 20 per dent. (Reported by The Week).
Epicureans would not want to eat two bags of microwaved popcorn a month, never mind every day. Epicurus believed in moderation in all things, including eating popcorn ( had it been available at the time ) . He would also have wanted to see the idiot who ate all that’s popcorn take responsibility for his own stupidity.
