Is anyone out there concerned about constant software upgrades?
Almost every day there up pops a notice on the screen announcing an upgrade to some piece of software on my computer.
Fortunately, most of these upgrades go on in the background and do not unduly interfere with work. But one does wonder how necessary they are. Just like a nation that has a big army and is therefore tempted to use it at the drop of a hat, software companies have their mates in the programming room and have to take their minds off computer games and hanging out with cups of coffee. So they pester us with yet another upgrade (Mozilla Firefox has one a week, it seems).
Is this a sign of the well-known incredible American productivity or is it (more probably) work for the sake of work? Lots of self-justifying messages from under-employed software gurus, please.
If it wasn’t for my stellar helper and supporter, John, without whom I wouldn’t have the beginning of a blog, I have survived the world’s most time-consuming upgrade of WordPress, the very originator of this blog system. Very good it is too, when it’s working, but WordPress love upgrades and are so proud of them. Meanwhile, I have spent hours, with John, trying to get the operation of this site back to what it was before the upgrade. I am not expected to complain. Indeed, it’s probably all my fault for having a blog at all! Thanks, John, anyway!
