I applaud the manner in which the Coptic Orthodox Church recently appointed its new Pope. Pope Tawadros II was chosen by a blindfolded boy (randomly chosen from a line-up of 12) , who picked his name from a chalice. The chalice contained the names of three candidates shortlisted following a consultation involving 2,400 electors, whose names and qualifications have not been revealed
The church of England has a more straightforward method of choosing an Archbishop of Canterbury, viz. he should preferably be a white, old Etonian, must not be a woman, and the Lord help us if he’s a homosexual. Henry VIII would approve.
Good luck with that!
You may be right in that he has all the Right Credentials, He is Worldly Wise; has Been About; Has worked in the Real World of business and commerce; is able to speak up about Important Things; believes the Gospel; and is a breath of Fresh Air.
I join you in wishing him good luck – not that there is such a thing.
