As the Church of England was voting against female bishops last week, the Anglican Church of Southern Africa was celebrating the consecration of its first woman bishop. The new bishop of Swaziland, Ellinah Wamukoya, 61, said she hoped to represent the “mother attribute of God. A mother is a caring person, but a mother can be firm in doing whatever she is doing,” she added. (The Week)
Since she has, in such a timely manner, shown up the Church of England for the antediluvian institution it is, maybe she can show British parents a thing or two about discipline, not to mention good manners, while she is about it. She does say she is a “firm” person.
I have been most impressed by the professionalism and courtesy and discipline of many Africans I recently met in southern Africa. We could do with a bit of that in the more “developed” world.
Epicureanism is nothing if it does not stand for equality of opportunity, equality of the sexes, and an ability to get on with people of other cultures. Good luck, bishop Wamukoya!
