How can it be that a huge proportion of the American population is un-moved by this statistic? Were you living in ancient Greece and you were to recount the above fact to your fellow Greeks, philosophers or not, they would think you were a fantasist or a plain liar. No one would believe you. People living today outside the United States can hardly believe it, either.
The fiercest defenders of the status quo are those who live in the the most devoutly christian parts of the country. How do pastors justify the ethical and moral support for unrestricted gun ownership?
