Heaven and hell were invented to offer hope to the hope-less and as a means whereby priests could frighten (or encouraghe) their flocks into compliance. No wonder kings and others through the ages more interested in power than in spirituality have loved the idea, and have pounced upon the idea of the god within, or the personal god, and declared the idea heretical. Got to keep the priests employed!
