The Epicurean way of life: it needs repeating

Live simply and prudently, with self-control and moderation. Seek simple pleasures, those that satisfy natural and necessary desires, chief of which are food, drink, clothing, shelter, friendship and love.

The idea that Epicureanism sheer self-indulgence is nonsense, but it is perpetuated by the Roman Catholic church today.  See their derogatory piece on Epicureanism:     http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/05500b.htm

  1. Give me a break! What alot of misleading propaganda. Everyone knows that you so-called epicureans just sit around and drink Chardonnay and look down your noses at those you disagree with. I don’t agree with Catholics. They are apostates and the papacy is just a business (the second oldest business in the world), but they got it right when they trashed Epicurus, who was just an early atheist without a moral to his name.

  2. He’s allowed his say. Epicureans are very tolerant. We believe in free speech and allowing comments to speak for themselves. But “without a moral to his name” is a bit rich, given the support of the Christian Right for the war in Iraq, the persecution of Palestinians, the invasion of Somalia (with US arms and advisors), and the imminent war being plotted with Iran (can you believe it?), to name but a few current issues.

But the more people like Charlie show how close they are to Moslem fundamentalists, the more likely there is to be revulsion against them. So carry on, Charlie!

  3. O.K,maybe I was a bit over the top. But I do believe that George Bush has been chosen to be God’s instrument for facilitating the endtime. A war with Iran and all that would result in a conflagration in the Middle East, as expected and foretold in the Bible. So carry on, George W.!

  4. Thanks Robert; I am new to this blog; some blogs, such as beliefnet, restrict the conversation to the topics appropriate to the discussion, no offense, Charlie; you are perfectly entitled to your opinion, as we all are; so, can you please enlighten me on how you formulated your belief(a belief is just that; it is not a fact until experienced), that George Bush has been chosen, etc, etc.?

  5. Robert, the Catholic piece seems a fair one, given their biases. They don’t seem to say we’re into self-indulgence, but distinguish Epicureans from the Cyrenaics, with a prudent life rated over sensual indulgence. And they distinguish up front between an epicure and an Epicurean. There are derogatory comments added, much as we might add that transsubstantiation is a load of tripe.
