Epicureanism and fighting

"Fight the good fight with all your might
Thine is the strength and thine the might."

I remember this, hopefully correctly, from school chapel at the age of 18, a good Christian sentiment.

Why is "fighting" so highly regarded?  We "fight" the Taliban in Helmand province (instead of talking to them).  We "fight" Hamas in Gaza instead of talking to them.  A certain Presidential candidate (no politics here) will "fight" until on to the literally bitter end and is cheered on by large numbers of supporters.  Whether the fighting is in the interests of the country, the party, the community etc is secondary to the idea of "fighting".

The reality is that the "fighting" is usually personal or corporate.  We are fighting in Afghanistan to make the country safe for an oil pipeline that probably could be negotiated anyway.  We are "fighting" Hamas to avoid facing the displacement of illegal settlements in the West Bank.  We are fighting the election to discredit the other side comprehensively – – rather than discuss the issues – – thus allowing us personally to stand unopposed in 2012?. The "fighting" rarely has any public good attached to it.

It is also literally childish. When you are grown-up, self-confident  and comfortable in your own skin you shouldn’t need to be a gang member.   But then I have a European sensibility.  I can even agree with the Pope on foreign affairs:  Talk, damn you! (or words to that effect).

Epicurus promoted the idea of the garden, friendship and quietitude for a good reason.  His philosophy was the opposite of "fighting".

  1. Fighting is so tiring. Every day we wake up to news of more fighting. it must be exhausting to get up and start “fighting” over breakfast and continue “fighting” till 11 p.m. Imagine living with someone like that and hearing their aggressive tones all day every day. Yet there are tens of thousands who do and thousands who die and are homeless because of it..
