Food prices

Record world prices for most staple foods have led to an 18% food price inflation in China, 13% in Indonesia and Pakistan, and 10% in Latin America, Russia and India  (UNFA).  Wheat has doubled in price, maize is 50% higher than a year ago and rice is 20% higher.  Global food reserves are the lowest they have been in the last 20 years.

Record prices are due to high oil prices and the switch to growing biofuels, extreme weather and growing demand from India and China.  On top of all this there have been unprecedented floods and a growing lack of drinking water.   We are in for a bumpy ride.

But  I’m all right, Jack.*

(*For the benefit of Americans, this phrase refers to famous  line in a Peter Sellers film that satirized the selfishness of the powerful and care-less).
