Most of my family seem to be helping support or educate African AIDS victims. My wife and I have been involved in two. It wouldn’t take all that many people in the West to put up a bit of money and account for those 13 -15 million orphaned kids. The problem is, who to trust? The boy (in particular) whom we have been involved with is by our calculations 17 years old. Even in the West if he wasn’t going to college he would be out in the world looking for a job. Suddenly, we are told he has moved to a secondary school. From what? We thought he was already there. Excuse me, what is going on? The charity concerned cannot explain why he is still in school. What are we contributing to? Why are we not contributing to a younger kid, just starting out? The weirdness only starts there – I won’t bore the reader. But can anyone suggest an organized, honest, well-managed charity?
Yes, I can. Tear Fund is, as far as I can see, the most trustworthy charity. My son was supporting a child with them in Indonesia, until one day they had to inform him that they had to withdraw their support because some-one (an Indonesian national)was embezzling the money sent for his support. They withdrew their for that particular school immediately. Yes children were disadvantaged as a result, but the word gets round about how strict they are.Their financial systems and state is very transparent and they support projects all over the world.
I saw what happened to the money.(misappropriated) machinery (left to rust due to spare parts non existent or stolen), and other things sent out India by Oxfam. It put me off supporting any charity until I came across Tear fund.
Thank you for that, Jane. Transparency is the key thing. There are too many incompetent organizations around. They are not necessarily dishonest, but they cannot organize themselves out of a paper bag.
