We should rescue morality from Christian and Moslem ownership. Most of morality is common sense and pre-dates the Jews in Israel, not to mention Jesus.
Human beings ten centuries or more ago were quite able to work out that murder was a bad idea, that stealing other people’s wives, slaves and sheep was anti-social and should be prevented. I am sure, given a low population, short lives, disease and plentiful land they also were against abortion, child-slaying and homosexuality (in so far as it did nothing to increase the tribe). One doesn’t need to be a priest to work these things out. Living in a mudbrick hut, being poor and being dressed in sheepskin doesn’t make you stupid.
Once you detach morality from organized religion one can then update one’s take on morality: is it really in the interests of mankind to stress the planet with 9 billion human beings? What is really so bad about a loving relationship between two people of the same sex, who do not bring extra mouths into the world to fed and clothe? Love should be the yardstick.
I may be deceiving myself, but I feel that my wife and I and those of our friends and family who, to some degree or another, reject traditional religious observation, are as moral, decent and ethical as any practicing Christian. Privately, I might actually claim to be more so, but this is a sin of egotism and arrogance, and I never said it out loud, did I?
