I am personally turned off by the modern tendency to write formless, melody-less music that only 3 pianists in the world can play. The BBC quite rightly introduces audiences to new composers, but are they musicologists in disguise? Epicureans like music that brings contentment, pleasure and elevated feelings.
We’re assaulted by musical extremes — at one end you have the semiquaverers tremolanding and at the other, brutal “musical” noise beats you over the head. In the latter category, almost every commercial establishment blares out loud, ataraxia-killing music. It is a plague and it is inescapable — in grocery and department stores, drug stores, restaurants, coffee shops etc. etc. It’s for sure that Epicurus had no loudspeakers in his garden.
