Yesterday I spent clearing a new and overgrown patch of land for an extension of my son’s allotment, where he will grow luxuriant vegetables and herbs. The previous owner had left all manner of poles, strings and wires on the plot, and the grass was a foot or more high. Despite the regular showers it was a delight to work with my hands, and I went home tired, but with a feeling of achievment.
This is what every Epicurean should do, faced as we are by another recession (caused by stupidity, greed and an ideological aversion to government oversight and restraint). We should retreat into our gardens, literally or metaphorically, and clear the weeds, cultivating only our friends and our minds.
By the way, my other son told me there was going to be a stock market crash 6 months ago. He should know- he is in financial services. If he knew why didn’t all the financial gurus and overpaid bigwigs know as well? Too busy trying to make that extra million?
Yes, very sage advice. Still, isn’t it sometimes hard to follow when the weeds threatening our garden creep in from surrounding patches? Maybe we need to impeach idiot gardeners even though that would require wandering out of our tranquil Epicurean haven.
