Privacy Policy

Who we are

This is Epicurus Today and our website address is https://epicurus.today. This is a legacy website, that is, it is not actively engaged in growth or development. It is the digital subsistence of what was formerly an active blog. It is no longer active, but it continues to be available on the internet for the benefit of such interest as there may be in it. There is nothing for sale or barter. Nothing is asked of visitors, if any, except maybe somber reflection.

Comments

If visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection. An anonymized string created from the visitor’s email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if the visitor is using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of a comment, the visitor’s profile picture is visible to the public in the context of their comment.

Media

If a visitor contemplates uploading an image to the website, they should avoid uploading any images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS). Visitors to the website could download and extract such data.

Cookies

If you visit our login page, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser. If a visitor leaves a comment they may opt-in to saving their name, email address and website in cookies. This is for the visitor’s convenience so they won’t have to fill in their details again if they leave another comment later. These cookies will last for one year. If a visitor logs in, we will set up several cookies to save their login information and their screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If a visitor selects “Remember Me”, their login will persist for two weeks. If the visitor logs out of their account, their login cookies will be removed. If a visitor publishes or edits an article, an additional cookie will be saved in their browser. This cookie includes no personal data but simply indicates the post ID of the article published or edited. It expires after one day.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.) from other websites. Embedded content from other websites behaves in the same way as if the visitor visited the other website. Such other websites may collect data about the visitor, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor the visitor’s interaction with that embedded content, including tracking their interaction with the embedded content if the visitor has an account and was logged in to that website.

Who we share your data with

We don’t intentionally share any visitor’s data with anybody. Nevertheless, this is a website and it is comprised of digital encoding on one or more servers (computers maintained by our web hosting company). Consequently, all the data associated with this website, including digital information and tracks left by visitors, could be accessed or obtained by anybody who steals our hosting company’s computers, or who somehow manages to access (hack) them and steal the digital contents thereon. We believe that our hosting company’s servers are protected with proper security guards, both physical and digital, so as to prevent improper access to such data. In the event that such safeguards were overcome and the data were improperly accessed or obtained, we would not consider to be the same as sharing. Nevertheless, we felt this sort of eventuality to be worth mentioning here.

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. For visitors who register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you provided and, if we have that data, we will honor your request as soon as possible. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Where your data is sent

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service. To our knowledge, such services as we use do not retain any personal data that may be filtered in in the course of processing for such detection.

In conclusion

Inasmuch as this is a dormant site where visitors are not solicited, where information is not sought, and where no commerce is conducted, we think there is not a lot for visitors to be concerned about. Nevertheless, we felt it best to mention the matters above. Furthermore, while it should go without saying, we will say it anyhow: Whether you are subscribing, posting a comment, or in any other way interacting with this website, DO NOT POST ANY INFORMATION THAT COULD BE USED IN ANY WAY BY ANYBODY WITH CRIMINAL INTENTIONS, FOR EXAMPLE, DON’T POST YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER, BANK ACCOUNT NUMBER, CREDIT CARD NUMBER, SWISS BANK ACCOUNT NUMBER, NAMES OF RELATIVES WHO MAY WISH THEIR IDENTITIES KEPT SECRET OR WHO MAY BE VULNERABLE TO THEFT, DECEPTION OR BLACKMAIL OR WHO MAY BE IN A WITNESS PROTECTION PROGRAM, ETC. BE DILIGENT. BE SMART. BE SAFE.
